Here you can download SongSprouter for Microsoft Windows for free. Click SongSprouter64 or SongSprouter32 to download a zip file for either the 64-bit or the 32-bit version. If your web browser asks if you want to open the file or save it, then say to save it, which will download the zip file to wherever you usually download files to from the web.
SongSprouter64
for 64-bit Windows 10
SongSprouter32
for 32-bit or 64-bit Windows XP through Windows 10
(The hairy details about which version to choose: The 32-bit version works on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows, but there is a small chance that it will fail to start up if other software has loaded something like a shared library (DLL) at the same address range in virtual memory that SongSprouter uses. So if you have 64-bit Windows 10, then using the 64-bit version may be prudent, and may be a bit faster.)
There is no automated installation. Just download the zip file, unzip it, and place the resulting folder wherever you like. Then run songsprouter.exe in that folder to start it up.
As usual, you could right-click songsprouter.exe in the Windows file manager and select either Pin to Start or Pin to Taskbar or Send to | Desktop to put SongSprouter in an easy-to-reach place for running it.
SongSprouter will create a folder called songsprouter in your personal
Music folder, at a path like
c:/Users/
SongSprouter plays the MIDI files that it creates through the Microsoft GS Wavetable synth, which appears to be built into every non-server copy of Windows, including virtual machines. But if that synth should happen to be missing in some copy of Windows, such as a server edition, then SongSprouter will not be able to play the MIDI files that it creates. It has been found to play just fine in a Windows virtual machine on a Mac (except that the first bar or so of some songs would play back at a slightly slower tempo).
