FOOD NOT LAWNS!: How to Turn Your Yard into a Garden
And Your Neighborhood into a Community,
Sunday, June 1st | 10AM-3:30PM
Location: Garden for the Environment, 7th Ave at
Lawton Street, San Francisco.

Join Heather Flores, author of Food Not Lawns, at
Garden for the Environment for an all-day workshop of
permaculture instruction and community food gardening
conversation. The morning focuses on the basics of
permaculture ethics and principles, as applied in the
small-scale urban garden. The afternoon focuses on
multilevel garden design, and closing resource loops
in areas such as water, waste, labor, and community
interaction. Using classic permaculture principles
such as relative location, stacking functions, and
recycling, we will identify and address recurrent
design challenges. Please bring a vegetarian dish to
share for a potluck lunch at noon. The book Food Not
Lawns will be available for purchase at the workshop.

URBAN COMPOSTING

Location: Garden for the Environment, 7th Ave at
Lawton Street, San Francisco.

Give your summer garden a boost that will guarantee
vibrant colors and delectable veggies for the months
to follow! Aside from encouraging beneficial soil
organisms and conserving a non-renewable resource,
composting makes an excellent fertilizer that releases
nutrients slowly at a rate which the plants can use
them. This fun, hands-on class teaches methods for
backyard and worm composting for home and community
gardens. Come learn what you can do to improve your
garden and prevent organic waste from ending up in the
landfill! Garden For the Environment, 7th Ave at
Lawton Street, San Francisco. Please call 415.731.5627
or email info@gardenfortheenvironment.org to
pre-register or for more information. FREE!
