Planet Drum works with the concept of a bioregion: a distinct area with coherent and interconnected plant and animal communities, and natural systems, often defined by a watershed. This provides an effective grassroots approach to ecology that emphasizes sustainability, community self-determination and regional self-reliance. Bioregions are whole 'life-places' with unique requirements for human inhabitation. Planet Drum's current focus is creating ecological cities and developing local social and economic programs.
Planet Drum encourages local organizations and individuals through its publications, speakers, workshops, and projects (in Ecuador, the San Francisco Bay Area, and with the Winter Olympics).
