Masked Mexico in the Age of Anxiety: Film Screening and Conversation with Filmmaker Greg Berger

Filmmaker Greg Berger will present and discuss his new films:

Amor en Tiempos de Influenza (Love in Times of Influenza), 15 minutes

Written, shot, and edited in the heat Mexico’s 2009 swine flu scare, this fictionalized documentary combines historical narrative and absurdist Mexico City street theatre to unmask the political interests behind Mexico’s flu scare, particularly the role that U.S. agribusiness corporation Smithfield Foods may have played in the mutation of the H1N1 virus.

La Rebeldia Bajo Sitio (Rebellion Under Seige), 35 minutes

In Mexico’s Chiapas State, indigenous farmers are being beaten, shot and imprisoned by armed thugs and their government supporters, after years of relative calm in the region. Most of the victims are civilian supporters of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation. Commissioned by Venezuelan television network TeleSUR, this documentary discusses the connections between the U.S.-funded drug war and the return of paramilitary violence to Chiapas.
