Workshop: Beginning Seed Saving, plus Eating Acorns

Learn the Whys and Hows of garden seed saving. An important aspect of sustainability and an antidote to the disappearance of crop varieties, seed saving is an enjoyable part of completing the cycle in your garden. Learn the basics of pollination, selecting, harvesting, processing and storing seed. Learn resources for specific crop requirements as well as networks for exchanging seed. As a bonus, we'll learn about local oak trees and acorns, and how to harvest, store, prepare, and enjoy eating them. Class will include hands-on demonstrations, recipes and tasting acorn food.  Instructor Terri Compost has been curating the Bay Area Seed Interchange Library (BASIL) at the Ecology Center for several years. She is a local organic gardener and seed saver and has studied seed saving at the Occidental Arts and Ecology Center and in her own garden and the People's Park Community Garden. She is also a naturalist at the Oakland Museum of California and the Hostel Adventure Program in the Marin Headlands. Call to pre-register. Workshop: Eat Local

Learn about and begin eating more from your local "Foodshed".  Know your farmers markets and eat from local farms, organic gardens, container and roof gardens. We'll talk about gleaning, foraging, edible weeds and landscaping, alternate food sources, food preservation, and more.  "Eat what is in abundance."  There will be an acorn preparation demo and short weed walk, weather permitting. Taught by Terri Compost, a local naturalist who has been collecting and eating wild foods for many years and is still around to tell the tales.  Please call to register.  Please specify when registering if ASL interpretation is requested, (at least 10 working days in advance).
